This collaboration provides access to some the most advanced power quality monitoring equipment in the World. This equipment can be installed permanently to constantly monitor the quality of supply and report on it, or portable versions are available that can be temporarily install to identify issues. These issues can include the following:

  • High harmonic currents or voltages that can result in unexpected trips of breakers, high temperatures in equipment or equipment failure. High harmonics are caused by non-linear loads in an electrical system.
  • Voltage dips or swells in the electricity supply. These dips and swells can affect the operation of electrical equipment for example – variable speed drive monitor the supply voltage and will trip if preconfigured conditions are exceeded. These trips can result in production loss if linked to critical equipment.
  • Power Factor – a low power factor results in higher currents that in turn can result in cables, breakers and transformers to be closer to operating limits. This can cause trips, cables and transformer overload.

Though partnerships; BBEnergy has solutions and the design capabilities available to overcome or address these quality of supply problems.

  • For harmonics – active or passive harmonic filters can be specified, implemented, maintained and monitored.
  • For dips or swells – power electronic solutions as well as battery solutions can be specified, implemented, maintained and monitored. These solutions are implemented and based on analysing the business case linked to production.
  • Power Factor correction – traditional PF solutions using passive harmonic filters and capacitor banks or active solutions using power electronics can be specified, implemented, maintained and monitored. These solutions are implemented and based on analysing the business case linked to electricity cost savings and prolonged use of lower rated existing equipment e.g. transformers.
